Category: Let's talk
The title is pretty straight forward.
I'll start by talking about my feelings toward's the matter.
I know that many people are all for cosmetics because they think it makes them look better or because it was what they were taught to use to look better.
I myself don't use make-up of any kind or nail polish. People have always told me that I look beautiful, gorgeous, and so on, so I think it's pointless to use cosmetics for beautification. In addition, it seems like more of a hassel to me. I don't ever need to factor in time to makeup my face or paint my nails. Oh, and then later, it all has to be refined or removed, so I just don't deal with those things.
As far as clothes go, I hate jeans and I absolutely love dressing up, though I'm not willing to sacrifice pleasure for beauty. If I'm not comfortable in it, I ain't wearin' it. I usually dress up for church and other formal occasions, and sometimes I'll dress up on a random Wednesday or Monday. I love dresses and skirts, but I hate hate hate high-heels. A small heel is alright, but I'm not a big fan at all. High-heels are not comfortable for walking, standing, sitting, so they're out! And I don't know how anyone travels on stairs in those things.
Jewelry? Love it! I have a specific necklace, bracelet, and pair of earrings for each day of the week. I know that's a bit obsessive compulsive, but that's me.
As for hair, I usually just wear mine straight. In the winter, I have bangs, and in the summer, I don't. Sometimes, I'll wear my hair in a high ponytail, and my hair's long enough so that if the ponytail start's up in the center of my scalp, it hangs down to my shoulders. I'd like some ideas for different hair styles, just to try out and see what else I might like. I usually don't spend much time on my hair. I just oil my scalp and comb and brush it, and leave it at that.
I used to wear makeup when I could see well enough to be confident in my ability to apply it and look good. Now that I can't, I just wear lipstick.
I used to love wearing dresses and skirts to work. Then I started having these damn foot ulcers and for almost 10 years have had to wear a special boot on one foot or orthopedic shoes. Neither looks good with dressy clothes, so I started dressing a lot more casually for work. Luckily I worked in a place with no real dress code.
As for jewelry, I love buying earings for my pierced ears. Have way more than I need.
Wow, this is the kind of girl talk I rarely engage in, but here we go.
Inquisitive, you and I have quite a bit in common, it would seem. I feel just as you do about make-up. I went through a phase in middle school where I loved it, had to wear it, but mostly it was because my older sisters did, and friends were beginning to. But one of my good features is my skin. My Mom has it, and I inherited it, thank God. It didn't take me long to figure out that wearing make-up actually made my skin feel a lot worse. I've been told I look just fine, if not better, without it, so I don't wear it. On very, very seldom occasions I will, like weddings and stuff, but even then, it's incredibly light. Maybe a bit of blush, a bit of lipstick. But that's so rare I can't even remember the last time it happened.
The one difference we have is clothes. I don't generally like dresses. Yes, occasionally it is nice to dress up. For example, at the recent NFB convention, I dressed up for banquet. I think the last time I had worn a dress prior to that was 2008, at a friend's wedding. It felt good, wearing that dress at Convention. My biggest problem with dresses is nylons. I think if I could wear a dress sans the nylons, I'd like them a lot better. I love shorts and t-shirts in summer, jeans and sweatshirts in winter. I'm not talking about the ratty kind. I feel I buy and have nice-looking clothing, even if it is casual. And I love tennis shoes, any time of the year. But, like you, if it's not comfortable, I'm not wearing it, at least not anymore than necessary.
A question. How do you have bangs part of the year, and not in another? Do you let them grow out every year? How do you handle that annoying in between stage, where they're not long enough to be bangs really, but too long to do much with? Wish I had some ideas for new/different hair styles for you, but I really don't. Again, another good feature of mine is my hair. It has natural wave to it, and I've been told it actually looks best when I simply wash it, brush it out, and let it just dry on its own. I've been asked what I do to make it look the way it does, and the answer is virtually nothing, except use good shampoos on it, and keep it as healthy as I can. Oh, and it has layers to it, because I've been told that brings out it's wave and curl. One of my sisters suggested I get highlights, but you can forget it. Everyone else has told me it looks pretty as it is, and I'd only screw it up with highlights. I quite agree. Before I grew it out as a teen, everyone told me what a hassle long hair would be, but honestly, it's never been easier to take care of.
As far as jewelry, I( used to love it. I'd wear it all the time. I'm still not opposed to it, but again, I just don't feel I have much occasion to wear it. However, I definitely do in a professional setting. Whenever I become employed again, I imagine I'll be wearing jewelry nearly every day to work.
Yes, in November, I get my bangs cut, and in April, I just brush them back into my hair and grow them out. I do this because I get my hair straightened, and in the summer, I find that the sweat on my forehead ruins my bangs, making them super curly again.
I usually wear t-shirts or tank tops and shorts in the summer, and long sleeves and sweat pants and corduroys in the winter.
I don't usually engage in this kind of talk either, but I was just curious about how other girls felt.
To the original poster, I totally agree with you about high heels! I don't know how people walk in them; they're so uncomfortable!
I love jewelry too! I wear earrings, necklaces, bracelets, rings, and I have an anklet for the summer.
I like to wear makeup sometimes when I go out. Some makeup irritates my skin, so I have to be careful.
As for clothes, I usually just wear jeans, T-shirts or sweaters, and sneakers. I'll dress up for special occasions or if I'm going out.
i don't really do much with my hair; I usually just wear it loose or in a ponytail. I straighten it and sometimes put highlights in it.
My nails have always been weak and crappy and don't grow much, so I don't do much with them; I just file them once in a while.
Alicia, I've been hearing more and more women have stopped wearing hose over the past several years. Apparently most women don't even wear them to work. Perhaps they wear tights or dark colored hose in the winter but nothing in the summer. However, I continued wearing them with dresses and skirts even when I heard it was becoming unpopular. My skin is very fair, and I do not tan at all, so I felt I needed even the nude colored hose to at least give my legs a little color. Besides, I always felt my legs looked better in hose than without.
I only wear hose in the winter as well. There's really no need for them when it's warm out.
You couldn't pay me a million dollars to put any makeup on my face. God, I hate it.
I've never been a fan of makeup, mostly because I'm afraid I'll mess it up and look awful. If I had to, I'd put on a bit of lipstick, but so far, I haven't had occasion. I'll wear it grudgingly if someone puts it on me for a formal picture, or some event, but I always feel the gunk on my face, and feel like I look like a clown. Also, how am I going to know if it smears or runs?
I hate my hair. It's straight. Dressing it up for me is blow drying it out so it has some volume. I can't curl itk, because it won't stay. I normally just tie it back in a low ponytail for everyday or days when I'm lazy. I'll pull it up in a high ponytail if I'm feeling like a great day in the morning. sometimes I'll put it in a half ponytail. I'm trying to master brading it, but so far, the only time I can half-decently do it is when it's wet. And even then, it's a messy brade.
As for clothes, I'm a jeans girl. My favorite sweaters are the knit/cashmere type. I normally wear jeans with flip-flops to class unless it's winter, because I don't want my legs to freeze. I'm a bum, I know. I like skirts and dresses, but I don't have much occasion to wear them. Also, I'm too lazy to spend half an hour on it before class in the mornings, not wen I can just roll out of bed and throw on jeans. It's also hard for me to know what's in style or what looks good.
I love jewelry, and wear it pretty often. I hate bracelets, because I have such tiny wrists, they always fall down my arm. Earrings are my favorite.
the only time I wear makeup is for very special occasions, and it has to be a very special one like a wedding or a performance I'm involved in. and even when I do, I don't like anything too major. I want to look natural rather than glamorous. Just a little foundation, maybe a little blush, and some lip gloss. As for my hair, I'll admit I do highlight it, but the only reason I do this is because once I'm out of that salon, I can go about my business normally and don't have to worry about keeping it up, except for the fact I have to use a heavy conditioner for a little while afterwards. I'm a very casual dresser. You'll occasionally see me in a skirt for a nice dinner or a performance, possibly a simple dress for formal occasions and major performances. the only time you'll see me with the whole works, as in, dress, makeup, fancy shoes, fancy hair do is at an occasion like a wedding, and trust me, I hate it. the first thing I do when I get home from these occasions is undo my hair and get out of those clothes and shoes I'm wearing.
i love this thread!!!! it's very cool.
I don'
t wear make up. It's a big hassle and I don't know if i look ok. Additionally I used to get my hair highlighted, but the last time i did, it was a disaster. The funny part was people wanting to let me know it was bad but should they tell me or shouldn't they?
I love love love long skirts. The summer trend of the maxi dress has made me very happy. In my job, I have f9ound that in a dress people treat me more respectfully and listen to me more intently.
i love rings and other jewlry. in fact, i call my rings my eye makeup. since i use my hands so much and don't wear eye makeup that's how i view it.
When I was younger i had waist length hair. now it's short. In the summer it keeps me cooler and in the winter it avoids the hat head syndrome.
Hahaha, Holly. Love the thing about the eye makeup.
As far as styles go, I've never cared about style. I just wear comfortable clothes, and make sure they match.
I go shopping with one of my best friends two or three times a year. She's excellent at helping me find stylish clothes and shoes that I look good in and love. I love tops that have fun textures and shapes. Although I like sweaters, I only wear them occasionally because I get hot easily. I'm not much of a skirt girl, but I do like to wear dresses, especially in the warmer months. Inquisitive, I'm glad to know there are other people out there who hate jeans! I thought I was the only one.
Oooh man I love love girl talk.
Let's start with the makeup: I would like to be propperly taught to wear it. but I agree, I'd only want to wear it to look natural. Not glamourous. And yes, I have no idea if it runs or smeers, that's another thing I worry about when I wear it.
For all my life I had my hair short because my mum said long hair would look ugly on me. Guess what I did when I came to England and lived far away from her: I let it grow out. I usually just brush it and then push it back with a hairband so I don't get hair in my face, and that's comfortable for me. I can not for the life of me do a pony tail. Too clumsy fingers. Lol. I do have highlights because I like a change.
Well. Normally i wear jeans or other trousers, flat shoes or sometimes shoes with a little heel. In summer I absolutely love sandals and flip flops. Only yesterday I baught two outfits, and I'm excited. I baught a lovely skirt, and, for the first time in 14 years, I got a dress. It's not a dress for special occasions. it's just a nice summer dress. And I'm so excited about that! Especially because the people in the shop said I could wear my flat black velvet shoes with the shiny toes with it, which are comfortable. I used to hate shopping. Now I love it because I can do it on my own without my parents criticizing. I love buying shoes, I have to admit.
I like necklaces, and I have an engagement ring. I do have pierced ears but I keep forgetting to wear earrings. I want to though. Just got to remember to wear them. But yes. I love dressing up, but i don't mind being casual either.
I'm not a big fan of make-up but i don't wear some sometimes. I just think if someone thinks i look good that it will be for my natural look not someone hiding behind a bunch of make-up... Yes it makes u look differents & sometimes glow, but i just want natural.
Clothing, well, i HATE jeans. Ima shorts, skirts, dresses kinda chick. Sometimes i like to wear capris. I love the latest trend blouses. I mostly like to dress up. On a lazy day i'll just throw some shorts & tank top. I really like to be comfortable in what i wear.
Heel, i love them, but just the short heels. I don't do stilettos or nothing like that. Something cute, comfortable & simple. But im maily a flip flop person even in the winter. Many times i've wore flip flops & a skirt during winter & my friend thought i was brave, lol.
Hairstyles-love doing my hair in many ways. Since i've been letting my hair grow its gonna be fun tryin to hairstyles. I've always done way different styles. I hate jus having it one or three different ways. (:
i forgot to say i never ever ever wear shorts. if i did, all those who would see me probably would need remediative thereapy for their post traumatic stress disorder.
Lol. Sorry Holly, but that was amusing. I like to wear shorts, but only in the summertime, and only if I've recently shaved my legs. Lol.
don't appologize ocean. it was meant to be. i have a dear friend who has to weigh 200 pounds. she's in her late 50s and insists on wearing ones that are almost bootie shorts. Also some of them are teeny weeny and kint. i'm like "where is your common sense?"
Yeah. You'd think at least that much would be common knowledge.
I am not a big make-up fan at all. I used to have girls in high school put some on me but not anymore. Now I just like lip gloss and nail polish for my finger and toe nails.
I love jeans. I like shorts, cute tank tops or just t-shirts and sweatshirts. I like high heals because they make me look taller but I don't wear them very much. I prefer sandles or flip flops. I'll dress up with skirts or dresses but only for parties.
I like jewelry of any kind and I want to get more piercings.
I love long hair and wear it in a ponytail or just leave it down. I have never highlighted or died my hair before.
I absolutely hate makeup. In high school my mother made me wear it to dances, but now I refuse to wear it. It can be itchy, and I have been told I'm beautiful without it. I don't see the point of nail polish either. The last time I had my nails done they started chipping later the same day. My haircut is extremely short but still feminine. It's very easy to take care of, and I can either spike it with gel or just run a comb through it. I usually do the latter because I have trouble spiking my hair, although it's supposed to be really easy.
I can't stand makeup, either. I'll wear it for special occasions if need be, but that's it.
I'm not really one for wearing dresses. I've always been a jeans, shorts, and short skirt kinda girl. I love showing skin, but not excessively.
as for getting my nails done, I'm not a fan of that, either. I have to be in the mood, honestly. it's the same way when it comes to wearing dresses, though.
I guess i'm more on the girly side than the rest of you here. :p
I wear make up, but only on special occasions, or if my face is badly sunburned. lol and even then, I don't usually wear a ton of it. I just don't always like the way it makes my face feal, and like most others on here, I prefer looking natural to looking glamorous. I love heels, but not if they're taller than like, three inches. I'm not trying to have broken ancles. I love dresses, especially sun dresses for some reason, but I only wear them to formal events because for some reason, I feel weird wearing them on a normal day. As far as skirts go, I can deal with them, but would honestly prefer not to wear them. On lazy days, I usually just wear a tank top with shorts or jeans depending on the weather. I don't mind jewlery, but I don't like wearing a lot at one time, even though I'm sure I have more jewlery than every other girl in my neighborhood combined. lol I don't wear it routinely, but when I actually feel like wearing it, I either just wear a pair of earrings alone, or a pair of earrings with a bracelet and/or necklace. My hair is almost down to my back, and usually a pain in the ass to deal with. :p On normal days, I usually just wear it in a high poneytail, and if it's wet, a half ponytail. On special occasions, or if I just feel like it, I usually straighten it. I just wish I felt like sitting down for almost an hour trying to straighten it more often.Seriously, that's how thick it is. I usually only color it every 6 months to a year, but it doesn't look so good with just highlights. And for some reason, I love having my nails done, preferably in a salon when I can afford it. :p
I'm a girly girl. I love makeup and clothes. I wear pants mainly to work, cause it's more comfortable and my office is freezing. Makeup isn't that hard to apply as a blind person. Ladies, pm me if you want a few tips. Lately I've been lax on doing my makeup before work, but it's not cause I'm being lazy, I just usually get up too late. I don't wear a lot of skirts, but I don't mind them. I don't have the right body type for shorts, but I will wear capris once in awhile. I love jeans. I don't like flip flops, cause I would prefer something with an ankle strap. I'm not a huge jewelry fan, but I like earrings, and necklaces once in awhile. I have short hair, but I do get it highlighted and trimmed a lot. I love going to the salon. I also get my brows waxed, cause I've been told it makes my eyes look bigger, plus, it just feels better. I like to layer my clothign, and I have a lot of cardigans, probably cause my office is like a freezer. I don't mind shoes with a bit of a heel, but not high heels. I like wedges and ankle boots, and I'm looking forward to buying some new fall shoes.
Makeup: If needed, powder base, mascara on the lashes, and bee's wax on the lips.
Nails: Bite them to all hell. Sometimes, though, I get my toenails done, although the person doing them better watch out, because I'm so ticklish I might just kick her in the face lol. I had acrylics once...never again. Those bitches just about did this tactilely defensive blindie in.
Hair: Straightened every once in a while, but usually wash, air dry, brush, and go or throw it up in a ponytail. This is a bit harder to do now that I've cut it short again. Every once in a while I'll wear a cute headband, but they give me headaches. Lol
Clothes: I only like jeans if they're a little baggier and easier to move in. I love organizational tees, T-shirts with sayings on them, wife-beaters, crochet-type tops, little dresses, and shorts. I'll sometimes wear flip-flops or sandals but usually run around in Acics tennis shoes because I have to walk a lot at school.
Jewelry: I wear a braided gold chain with a ring that belonged to a friend of my grandmother's, a set of gold-pearl earrings with CZ's that my boyfriend gave me, a pearl bracelet, and a gold birthstone ring both of which my grandparents gave me. I usually don't deviate from these sentimental pieces.
I've heard that getting a pedicure feels good, but I've never had one. I love heels, but they generally have to be wedges or boots with a chunky heel. Strappy stilettos and I don't get along very well. I feel naked if I'm not wearing my college class ring. I love earrings and wear them as often as possible; however, I had to let my holes close, so I have to wear clip-ons, which tend to pinch after a few hours. I own a lot of other jewelry, but I usually forget to wear it.
Another who won't touch makeup! NONONONONONOOOOO!
My mother used to MAKE me wear it, in high school, would attack me with the blusher brush. LOL (meaning that she'd walk up to me, and start brushing it onto my cheeks, without warning. We had some of our loudest screaming arguments, , over that kind of thing. Haha)
I prefer dresses, full-skirted ones, current style be damned. I wear what I'm comfortable in. That means flat-heeled shoes, too, so yeah, I guess I'm in complete agreement with Inquisitive, here. Jeans, I dislike them, but will wear them if it's too chilly for a dress.
I envy those of you with nice, thick hair! I can do nothing with mine; it's so soft that combs and such hair ornaments always fall right out. So I just wear a headband, if I can find one that fits, or just brush it back and leave it as is. It's nearly waist-length.
Pedicures tickle like crazy. And headbands give me headaches. Lolz
I'm a creature of comfort. Hate makeup. I guess lipstick wouldn't be so bad but I don't even bother with that. I'm broke and impatient so right now anyway, I untangle my dripping wet hair in the shower, brush it and put it up in one. I bite my nails but people always comment on how nice they look. I use to wear mostly jeans, tops with sneakers because of my horrible skin, but lately I just put on what feels good on me. Now this is a different topic all together, but I'm a big girl. Whenever I go shopping with my mom if we want to buy a dress and my stomach sticks out a little she incists I wear a gurdle underneath. I only do that for special occasions like performances or weddings. If its a summer dress I don't bother. I've grown to like light dresses because I can just throw it on. Lol I'm so lazy I don't even like putting on more than one piece of clothing if I can help it. That also goes for shoes. I hate socks and laces and straps or anything I have to buckle. flipflops and any shoe I can just shove my feet into is awesome I've also recently stopped wearing underwear. Hell, if my boobs were pirky as I'd like them to be I wouldn't care about a bra either. I don't do jewelry at all. The reason for that might stem from my seventh day adventist upbringing. They don't believe in so-called false Gods so we would only wear a bracelet or necklace once in a blue moon. Well I don't give a damn about false Gods I just find jewelry uncomfortable and that's it. What do you ladies like wearing when you're at home? When I still lived with my mudder I wore long t-shirts. Now that I have my own place I can't wait to take it off when I step inside lol.
Ah, another nudist! That's totally me. I attend college, but I have no roommate, so as soon as I get back for classes I free up the girls and strip down.
I really hate clothes. Some days I don't wear underwear; it just depends on the color of the clothing I'm wearing.
At home, I wear long t-shirts or nightgowns as well. I live with more than my mom. There are my brother and dad, but my dad and brother walk around shirtless sometimes.
Clothes are awful!
Lol.. I'm the complete opposite, I usually where layers unless it's really hot outside. But i get cold easily so I would rather have too much on than not enough.. I can always just take off a layer if I need to.
I've gotten into the habbit of taking off my shoes when I get home. The bra is sometimes next. I don't usually wear tank toops without something over them, unless I'm at home. One of my fave things to wear is an old pajama shirt, or my flannel pj pants. Lately I've been wearing slippers. It's beginning to get chilly here, and they help to protect my feet from my attacking cat. If I wear dress pants to work, I'll usually slipt into jeans. I'm all about comfort when I'm at home, unless I'm entertaining company. I tend to wear layers, I get cold easily as well.
I, too, tend to get cold really easily. so when I'm at home and I know I'm not going anywhere, I go for the ever comfortable sweat pants and sweat shirt, especially if I think I might be doing some cleaning, because at least if I spill any water or anything like that on my clothes, I'm not dirtying a good outfit at home.
I get cold easily as well, and in that case, I just throw on a robe, and fuzzy socks if my feet get cold. As few clothes as possible is my goal.
Living in cold ass up state New York doesn't offer me the pleasure of wearing flip flops and summer dresses outside and nothing inside all year round, but would you believe me if I told you that though I hate the cold I still hate dealing with all the heavy clothing? Lol when it starts to get cold in fact, I'm in denial and stubbornly incist on flipflops as my toes freeze. I'll tell you why though. It just wouldn't be me if I wasn't rushing out the door very close to or a few minutes late. So I need stuff I can get on quickly. My brother was also living with my mudder so if for no other reason I had to have clothes on. not that the ladies liked it either lol.
I'm all for as little clothes as possible. I get cold easily, but that's what a robe is for.
well, I jusgt look nice enough to be socially appropriate. I dress for comfort, don't like the girly topic, don't care about jewlry, makeup, dresses, and so forth, I just throw something on that would qualify wearing something presentable, and blah, that's it. I don't care, if you want to know me, know me for who I am and not how I look. there's the long of the short.
